From the President and CEO

It is an exciting time to be leading a women’s organization. Women are now half of the U.S. workforce, more than half of college enrollment and the primary earners in more than two-thirds of American families. A recent study by the Center for Women’s Business Research shows that women business owners generate $3 trillion in annual economic impact and provide 23 million jobs. As women business owners, we’ve seen these trends emerging—still it’s an exciting opportunity for NAWBO and for individual business owners who are forging ahead amidst difficult odds.
We’ve all heard about Maria Shriver’s report that was released last month. On her blog, she writes, “In 2009, women have more choices than they did 40 years ago. We’ve learned that while there’s much to cheer about, we still have a long way to go. Women’s expanding role in families, industry, the arts, government, politics, and other institutions is altering the American landscape. Women are learning they no longer have to shoehorn themselves into one stereotype or another, but they can do so if they choose—or they can make it up as they go along.”
While we’re doing so much to move forward, it’s an interesting opportunity to look at where we‘ve been and the impact that women business owners make—and to look ahead and plan our course. This issue of NAWBO Focus will do just that. It’s just one of the many reasons why organizations like NAWBO are so important. As we join together to advocate for small business, for women’s rights and for diversity in the workplace, we’re not just powering the dreams of our members; we’re bringing everyone to a better place.
