Being Innovative on Social Media | NAWBO

Social media itself is innovative. It is always changing and evolving, both in the platforms that become popular, and within the platforms themselves. As examples, look at how fast Snapchat rose and then fell in popularity; look at how often Facebook throws a curveball at us; look at the latest uproar about Instagram shadowbanning. If we can’t stay innovative on social media, our accounts will become stale and uninteresting, and no one will engage with us!

The big question is: “How do you stay on top of all of the innovation that happens in this industry on a daily basis?” The top two ways that I stay innovative on social media are to use the right tools, and to constantly search for social media trends.

I use social media tools to:

  • Stay consistent in my postings
  • Search for trending hashtags
  • Find the top trends in social media
  • Create stunning graphics
  • Make my life as a social media manager easier.

While there are many tools you can use for social media, the tools that I use most often are Hootsuite and Canva. I use Hootsuite to schedule posts, to search trending hashtags, to search for top stories, and to read about social media news. You can choose among many scheduling tools, but I found that Hootsuite works best for me. Canva allows me to create graphics in seconds that are branded, beautiful, creative, and visually appealing. Without these tools, my social media life would be much more boring and stale. Find tools that will simplify your life on social media, which will give you more time to spend being creative and innovative!

Staying on top of social media trends is a key component to being innovative. Find a good resource – it makes all the difference. Your resource can be a daily email from a social media publication; a Facebook Group that discusses ongoing trends; a Facebook Business Page or Twitter account that is all about social media. As a social media manager, I use several resources to stay on top of trends. Additonally, my goal in my own Facebook Group is to be that one good resource for social media trends. I share articles about the latest innovations and start discussions about trends, so that group members have a place to come to for information about social media trends.

While it’s important to know about trends, it’s not always necessary to implement them. You need to assess whether the trend will work for you. I still have not put any of my clients on Snapchat because that’s not where their target market is. So be aware, but don’t jump in headfirst until you’re certain the trend is right for you.

It’s not always easy to be constantly innovative in an industry that is essentially the definition of innovative, but you can start by using tools and being aware of trends.
