Why did you decide to own your own business?
Until the age of 40, owning a business was not a possibility I considered. I was working for a great company selling IT services, however, there were many items I wanted to do differently to increase the client experience that I unfortunately did not have the freedom to implement. In 2000, I had the chance to move to another organization to start a service division, in which I had 100% ownership of the process, client relationship, and business. After feeling the empowerment in developing and executing that division, I was intrigued to see what else I could accomplish. As most of you know, owning your own business is one of the most challenging and most fulling experiences a person can experience. Besides creating client value, my additional passion for owning a business was to give my employees a great place to build their career, increase their professional and personal skills, and feel appreciated as an employee. I wanted to create a culture that was so employee focused that my business would not need to advertise for open positions, our reputation for being a supportive business would attract talent on its own. We are getting closer to the goal our last three employees have come from referrals. I am happy to say client focus, employee driven, and integrity inspired actions are still the emphasis and strength of Netrix IT 16 years later.
Do you have a "story from the trenches" to share that could help another woman business owner on her journey?
A game changer for Netrix IT was the decision to implement Traction into our organization. Traction is a complete set of simple business tools based on accountability, ownership of tasks, and transparency of where the business is going and how it is getting there. This helps to align and synchronize all the pieces of your business to produce the results you are aiming for. Prior to Traction, Netrix IT was a strong organization, however we struggled with getting all of our initiatives completed. With implementation, there is weekly accountability and actions to address items that are not getting done, which has increased our completion of yearly goals by 35%. This increase has allowed our organization to break the revenue ceiling we had hit and will take us to the next level and beyond.
When and why did you join NAWBO-MN?
I joined NAWBO two years ago, and it has been one of the best decisions I have made as a business owner. I had decided to become more proactive in networking, something that I had put on the backburner due to working in the business, instead of on the business. After being introduced to Marnie Ochs-Raleigh and hearing how joining NAWBO has enriched her career, I knew it was the direction I needed to take.
