NAWBO event to gather business owners, legislators

Want face time time with legislators to discuss how gross receipts tax, procurement transparency, workers' compensation and other public policies are affecting your business?

On Wednesday evening, New Mexico businesses have the opportunity to do exactly that at the 14th annual Speak Out! event hosted by the Northern New Mexico chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO).

Organized by NAWBO's New Mexico president Kay Carrico and Robin Dozier Otten, president and CEO of RDO Strategic Consultants, the dinner and reception revolves around table discussions between members of the business community and policy makers that include senators, representatives, cabinet secretaries, members of the governor's executive leadership team and representatives of the state's congressional delegation.

"This event has been successful over the years because it isn’t like every other legislative reception that legislators have to attend. They actually have an unusual opportunity to hear the opinions of people who supply jobs in our state — small business people," she said. "We frequently have newly elected legislators come to the event when we have just held an election and we always have some members of the legislature who come year after year."

According to Otten, the event draws between 60 and 100 attendees every year and a significant number of legislators.
