Branding Starts From Within

When we hear the word “branding,” we often think about logos, slogans and taglines. Of course, all of those are true to branding. But it’s more than that. Branding draws upon an organization’s values and mission and is carried out through its actions—how it treats and respect others, both inside and outside the organization.

To successfully build a brand, an organization needs to start from within. When we feel good on the inside, it’s reflected in how we present ourselves and interact with others. Similarly, when employees feel good about their workplace, they’re more likely to engage in positive interactions with customers, and increase their productivity. In fact, a recent study by the University of Warwick found that happy employees are on average 12 percent more productive than their less-happy counterparts.

Intrigued? Here are a few tried-and-true ways to boost employee satisfaction through internal branding:

Recognition – Honoring an employee of the month with a certificate (and perhaps a gift card) is a great way to let employees know they are important assets to the company. Take it a step further by having leadership present the honor, and devote a space on a prominent wall for the employee of the month photo.

Social Media – Recognizing employees on social media is a great way to not only increase their satisfaction, but to also boost engagement on social media channels, whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn. This can be as simple as posting a few sentences about and a photo of your employee of the month, a group picture of staff who are spearheading an exciting new project, or a photo collage of a recent event. These postings flatter employees who are likely to share them with their family and friends for an internal/external win-win.

Events – Connecting with employees outside of their work environment can make them feel more connected to the organization, especially if games are organized for everyone at all levels of the organization to interact. A bowling night or simple carnival set-up with cornhole, ring toss and bingo can go a long way in boosting morale.

Naming Contest – Need a name for a new product or program? Consider inviting employees to submit suggestions, and then offer a prize to the employee who chooses the winning name.

Bring Child/Pet to Work – Admittedly, this is not for all businesses. However, if possible, dedicate a day of the week, month or year when employees are encouraged to bring children or fur babies to the office. This is especially suitable for companies with products or services that benefit parents and pet owners.

Lastly, ensure your employees understand why the organization was created, its core values and how their contributions have helped spur its success. Employees are a company’s best brand ambassadors, and if they feel valued and respected, they are more likely to spread the good word.
