How to Better Manage a Next Gen Workforce

As Millennials and Gen X, Y and Z come together in the workforce, many leaders are faced with managing a new type of worker with different work styles, expectations and behaviors. So, how can you effectively manage a next gen workforce (especially if you feel disconnected from that generation)? Step one: Get to know them!

A recent article in Inc. magazine shared some interesting insights about Generation Z, including how they will drive change in the workplace. Case in point: They have an increased desire for work-life balance, as seven in 10 Millennials experience at least some burnout at work. Perhaps surprisingly, the article notes that more than 90 percent of Generation Z prefer to have a human element to their teams, and 72 percent want to communicate face-to-face at work. About 60 percent of Generation Z also prefer to have more frequent feedback—two-thirds (versus less than half of Millennials) report they need feedback from their supervisor at least every few weeks in order to stay at their job.

Taking these differences into consideration, here are a few tips to help you better manage your multi-generational and next gen team:

  • Prioritize Teamwork: Make communication, projects, goals, successes and training a team-oriented experience. This will allow you to let everyone’s diverse strengths shine in their defined roles.
  • Don’t Be Afraid of Technology: While a human element is important in the workplace, technology can be a great tool to elevate communication, efficiency and engagement among employees. Keep informed and open to technology that aligns with your business needs.
  • Embrace Diversity: Build a diverse team across many generations, ethnicities and backgrounds to achieve a well-rounded blend of talent. Also, stay flexible about meeting your team’s needs—this will help to retain employees longer and keep them motivated in their roles.
